Dear Reader,
I have always wanted to be bilingual teacher to provide support for students that are developing into bilingual individuals and provide them with activities that actively engage their unique differences. Understanding how students develop literacy is important as a future bilingual teacher. I want to be able to acquire literacy strategies that promote and encourage my students to become fluent readers and writers in both their native language and English. The reason for developing the research topic is that many believe that as soon as students beings to learn English their level of comprehension in their native language decreases. I wanted to provide others and myself with effective and research based strategies that will help dual language and English language learners to be capable of learning two languages at the same time.
The research topic was designed around the following questions: How can a teacher promote literacy in two different languages effectively? Are there significant strategies to help dual language learners? How does oral skills promote literacy in the classroom? What types of activities will help students be more engaged in the activities? Once we fully understand how to support the needs of dual language learners we will be able to understand how and when to begin and provide support either in their native language or in English.
I wanted to provide ideas that help the community encourage and support reading and writing for dual language learners. Hopefully, the activities provide some ideas for teacher of dual language learners.
Thank you,
Enid Ortez
