Weekly Reading Experience
This artifact emphasizes the importance of providing a daily opportunity for reading aloud to dual language students, keeping a consistent routine, and creating literacy rich environment. When students are provided with an opportunity to listen to a read aloud they are more likely to increase their oral and written vocabulary. During the read aloud students are provided with the opportunity to answer open-ended questions that helps them visualize the scenes, expand on ideas, and other elements of the literacy. The daily reading schedule provides a routine that helps students become aware of the importance of reading. The schedule also emphasizes on importance of providing reading time in the students’ native language in order for the students to have the background knowledge when the story is read in English. The overall concept is that teacher and parents need to read aloud to children in order to increase their vocabulary.
